Abstract

The collision-induced fundamental Infrared absorption band of $H_{2}$ in the pure gas at 77, 196, and ${298^\circ} K$ has been recorded for a number of gas densities up to 60 amagat in two transmission-type absorption cells of sample path lengths 1m and 2m. An analysis of the absorption profiles was performed by assuming appropriate line $shapes^{1,2,3}$ and the characteristic half-width parameters ${\partial_{d}}$ and ${\partial_{c}}$ of the short-range overlap transitions and $\partial_{q}$ (and $\partial_{q}$,) of the long-range quadrupolar transitions were determined. From this analysis the contributions to the intensity of the band from the overlap- and quadrupolar- interactions were separated. The overlap parameters $\lambda$ and $\rho$ giving, respectively, the magnitude and range of the induced overlap dipole moment of the ${H_{2}}-{H_{2}}$ molecular pairs were then determined by obtaining the best fit of the calculated overlap part of the binary absorption coefficients as a function of temperature to the experimental values of the overlap part.
