Abstract
Simple theory indicates that linear $C_{n}O$ molecules with n even should have triplet ground states (e.g, $C_{2}O).{^{1}}$ Those with n odd are expected to be singlets. (Although well-studied, the experimental ground electronic state of $C_{3}O$ is not known.) We report here the electron-spin-resonance (ESR) spectra at $4^{\circ} K$ of $C_{4}O$ and possibly $C_{6}O$ formed from the reactions of CO with carbon molecules. $^{13}C$ nuclear hyperfine splittings and spin densities are in approximate accrod with INDO calculations.
