Abstract

Under certain conditions the convolution integral of the slit function and absorption line shape as observed, can be deconvoluted by means of Fourier transformation. By this method, when the slit function correction is not extremely large, the true line shape can be derived from the observed line shape.

Description

$^{\ast}$ The work supported by the Office of Naval Research. The slit function of the high resolution spectrometer at Johns Hopkins University was computed and measured, using the narrow $601.56 cm^{-1} CO_{2}$ $line.^{1}$ The measured and computed slit functions were found in good agreement. With this slit function the self-broadened observations of the water line $12_{-5}-11_{-2} (600.11 cm^{-1})$---broadened from 50-250 mm mercury pressure--- were analyzed to get true shapes.
