Abstract
The combined equivalent width of two strong Lorentz absorption lines, not necessarily equal, is estimated when their frequency separation falls inside a lower limit, or outside an upper limit. The limits of frequency separation are also calculated. They are predicted here by polynomials for the cases where the overall equivalent widths differ by 2, 5 and 10\% from that calculated for complete coincidence; or complete independence. The procedures given here apply for lines in the square root region of the curve of growth with half widths $\gamma_{o}$ between 0.02 and $0.20 cm^{-1}/atm;$ observed at pressures between 2 and 50 mm Hg, such that $\frac{Su}{\gamma}\geq 10^{3}$. The procedures greatly extend and facilitate the number of infrared vibration-rotation band members that may be measured and tested for the validity of assigned line parameters and the assumed Lorentz profile. Examples of the applications to spectra of water vapor measured by Hansen and Strong (cf., next abstract) will be discussed.
