Abstract

This arts research distinction project examines the relationship between choreography and Rudolf Laban’s theory of Effort regarding the elements of Space, Weight, Time, and Flow. To explore the significance of Laban's Effort qualities in movement and choreography, this project addresses the question: How do variations in notated qualities of Space, Weight, Time, and Flow impact the intention and emotion of choreography? Comprising three distinct phases, this project explores interpreting and comparing two different Labanotation scores depicting the same choreography, learning choreography, and culminating in an investigation of personal notation and choreographic processes.
