Abstract

We have studied the infrared spectra of $AlCl_{3}, AlCl_{2}Br, AlClBr_{2}$, and $AlBr_{3}$ in solid argon. These studies provide a sensitive test for any nonplanarity of $AlCl_{3}$. If, for example, $AlCl_{3}$ had a different symmetry from $AlBr_{3}$, one would expect the vibrations of the ternary trihalides, especially the out-of-plane mode, to be anharmonic. We observed the spectra and made vibrational assignments for all four molecules. We were able to calculate the observed frequencies of the mixed halides using the force constants obtained for $AlCl_{3}$ and $AlBr_{3}$. That Cl and Br could be treated as pseudo-isotopes implies that all the vibrations are reasonably harmonic and that all these molecules have the same structure, presumably planar.
