Abstract

Some plasma ``lipid'' fractions are shown by means of infrared absorption spectroscopy to vary qualitatively in certain neurological disorders. These spectra are of sufficient complexity and uniformity so as to be a useful research approach for defining certain biochemical abnormalities. The variations observed appear to be unique in certain disease states involving degenerative changes of the myelin sheath. The usefulness of the method as applied to this difficult class of compounds is demonstrated and several analyses presented. Possibilities for research, evaluation of treatments and diagnosis is discussed.
