Abstract

The Caretta Research Project is a research, conservation, and education program that works to study and protect loggerhead sea turtles. It is based on Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge which is island off the coast of Savannah, Georgia and gives volunteers a unique opportunity to have hands-on experience with sea turtle research and protection during the nesting and hatching seasons. Volunteers spend the nights patrolling the beach looking for nesting turtles, collecting data, applying tags, placing protective measures to keep the nests safe, checking nests for hatchlings, and taking inventory the nests for ongoing monitoring and research and conservation methods.
