Abstract

The absorption spectra of $H_{2}O$ and $D_{2}O$ have been obtained by photographic and photoelectric techniques using a 2.2 meter vacuum spectrograph and a 1-meter vacuum monochromator, respectively. The helium continuum was used as a background source. Previously determined Rydberg $series^{1}$ for $H_{2}O$ converging to the (0,0,0,) level of the ionic ground state ($\bar{X}\ ^{2}B_{1}$) have have been extended and their series limit was determined to be 101 784 $cm^{-1}$. The analogous and previously unreported series for $D_{2}O$ have also been determined and their series limit is 101 920 $cm^{-1}$. For $H_{2}O$ and $D_{2}O$, the region 800-970 {\AA} consists primarily of vibrational progressions which have $\Delta G$ values very similar to the spacing of the (O, $V_{2}^{\prime}, O)$ levels for the first excited state ($\bar{A}\ ^{2}A_{1}$) of their respective $ions^{2}$; indicating that they belong to Rydberg members converging to this state. These bands will be discussed further.
