Abstract

The $D^{\prime}-A^{\prime}$ transition of $Br_{2}$ is known primarily from emission $spectroscopy^{1}$. The $D^{\prime}$ state is readily excited by electric discharge, and discharge-pumped lasing of $Br_{2} D^{\prime}-A^{\prime}$ has been $demonstrated^{2}$. Due to large differences between the $D^{\prime}$ and $A^{\prime}$ state equilibrium internuclear searations, discharge spectra are dominated by transitions from low vibrational levels of $D^{\prime}$ to high vibrational levels of $A^{\prime}$. To provide complete descriptions of both states, we have examined the $D^{\prime}-A^{\prime}$ system in absorption. $Br_{2}(A^{\prime})$ was generated in free-jet expansions by discharge excitation (Emory) or photolysis of $B Br_{3}$ (Johns Hopkins). Bands originating from $A^{\prime}, v^{\prime\prime}=0$ and terminating on $D^{\prime}, 20 \leq v^{\prime} \leq 50$ were observed by laser induced fluorescence. Isotopic and rotational resolution was achieved. Analysis of these data is in progress. Spectroscopic constants and the radiative lifetime of $Br_{2}(D^{\prime})$ will be reported.
