Abstract

Sled hockey is a largely overlooked adaptive sport that acts as an alternative to ice hockey. The study approaches this sport from a product design perspective in an effort to identify and solve problems that detract from the sled hockey player’s positive experience. This will not only make this sport more accessible for its current participants, but also spread awareness of its existence and the many benefits it can have as an adaptive sport. The study communicates the key problem solving aspects of design, and shows how it can be applied to lifestyles outside of what is considered the norm. The research phase began with online and literary research to gather background and existing quantitative data to support my primary research. Following this, research was conducted with the assistance of a local sled hockey team, the Ohio Blades. Observations and interviews with the athletes, parents, and coaches helped to develop empathy for the needs of the user. Using these two types of data, the study moves through user testing, user experience, and market analysis to understand the opportunities and restrictions around which the solution could be developed. The study determined that there is a very diverse range of body types and disabilities that participate in the sport of sled hockey and that this coupled with high equipment cost is what typically limits player’s ability to get involved. The sport needs an improved sled for the average player, which is adaptable to different body and disability types, without creating added cost to the user through material and manufacturing considerations. The projects solution strives to do this, while also taking into consideration the market opportunities and day-to-day product interactions for additional improvements.
