Abstract

Bharatanatyam was revived from a preceding dance style, sadir in the 1930s as a classical Indian dance form. Beginning in the late 1960s-1980s, Bharatanatyam's classicism is questioned with multi-disciplinary performance. In India, the United States, and the United Kingdom fusion performances emerge integrating ballet, Bharatanatyam, yoga, martial arts, and more. As these innovations take place, the classical notion of Bharatanatyam is questioned. This thesis follows the emergence of modern Indian dance highlighting the 1984 East-West Dance Encounter and tracing the careers of prominent dancers Chandralekha, Uttara Asha Coorlwala, and Shobana Jeyasingh.
