Abstract
Type a and type b rotational transitions have been identified and measured for seven isotopic species of formamide $(H_{2}N^{14}-COH$, cis $HDN^{14}-COH$, trans $HDN^{14}-COH$, $D_{2}N^{14}-COH$, $H_{2}N^{14}-COH$, $(H_{2}N^{14}-COH$, and $H_{2}N^{14}-COH)$. These allowed accurate determination of all three rotational constants $A_{o}$, $B_{o}$ and $C_{o}$ for each species studied. The structural parameters obtained from these constants clearly show the molecule to be non-planar. The $H_{2}N-C$ group forms a pyramid type structure while the N--COH group is planar. In each isotopic species investigated, every line was accompanied by a. rather strong satellite indicating the presence of a low lying energy level. This level can be interpreted in terms of an inversion type motion with At Manning type potential.
