Abstract

Introduction: The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Roundtable on Evidence-based Medicine recommended that 90% of healthcare decisions be evidence-based by the year 2020. Nurses often do not know how to differentiate between research, evidence-based practice (EBP), and quality improvement (QI). Purpose: The first objective was to determine the effectiveness of using a framework that integrates research, EBP, and QI to identify the appropriate approach to address an issue. Another objective was to improve understanding of the differences between research, EBP, and QI and the steps of each approach. Methods: An online tool was developed with an embedded decision tree to determine if a project was research, EBP or QI. The user was directed to experts in each area for support. Results: Nurses were able to correctly identify the type of project they had 88% of the time while the tool correctly identified the type of project 100% of the time. Knowledge did not increase among users regarding the differences between research, EBP, and QI simply by using the tool. Most users rated the tool as effective and easy to use. Conclusions: Nurses must be able to differentiate between research, EBP, and QI in order to use the appropriate methods. Use of a conceptual framework that integrates research, EBP, and QI as the basis for an online tool correctly identified the type of project 100% of the time. Determining ways to increase the number of times a user is exposed to education regarding research, EBP, and QI could help to improve knowledge attainment.
