The molecular quadrupole moment and the parallel polarizability of boron trifluoride have been calculated from previously measured values of the dipole moments of $BF3$ containing van der Waals complexes.$\mathrm{<mrow\; data-mjx-texclass="ORD">(1)</mrow>}$ The values are \begin{eqnarray*}\Theta_{zz}(BF_{3}) & =& 3.37\times 10^{-26}esu cm^{3}\\alpha_{11}(BF_{3}) & =& 4.88 \times 10^{-24} cm^{3}.\end{eqnarray*} It is shown, by the success of this calculation, that previously reported statements (1) on the inapplicability of electrostatic calculations to deduce dipole moments of certain $BF3$ containing complexes were in error. The results are used to understand the dipole moment of the complex $HClBF3$.
