Abstract
Nursing retention is a key strategic initiative for many organizations. The first-year nurse experience is crucial, especially considering that this group exhibits the highest turnover rate compared to all other service tenures and comprises the largest group of nurses entering the workforce. Evidence from the literature suggests that peer support groups can enhance resilience in new graduate nurses, which can impact their retention rates. An evidence-based practice peer support group intervention was implemented one hour a week over a six-week period using a pre/post design. A DNP student facilitator enrolled seven new graduate nurses. Results of the new nurse experience were measured by collecting pre- and post-implementation data using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale Survey. We found an improvement in the average score for each of the ten questions from the survey from pre-implementation of the project to post-implementation of the intervention, leading to an increase in the total overall average score from pre-implementation (M, 26) of the project to post-implementation (M, 30.6). The data from this project suggests that healthcare organizations should prioritize the integration of evidence-based peer support groups and simulation training into nurse residency or orientation programs to cultivate a supportive and resilient nursing workforce.
