Abstract
Absorption and fluorescence spectra of radiation-induced radicals in 1,2-, 1,4-dihydronapthalene and 9,10-dihydroanthracene have been investigated. The vibrational analysis of the spectra suggests that the radical in the irradiated 1,4-di-hydronapthalene is 1-hydronaphthyl radical. The radicals in 1,2-dihydronapthalene and 9,10-dihydroanthracene are identified as 1- and 2-hydronaphthyl radicals and 9-dibenzocyclohexadienyl radical, respectively. The C-H bonds with common carbon atom are relatively weaker and one of them is easily broken by ionizing radiation. Advantage of using the dihydro compound in the identification of hydrogen-added-type radicals in aromatic hydrocarbon crystals through the optical spectroscopy is discussed.
