Abstract

I have been dancing all my life and have experienced many different types. I grew up in a very competitive and commercial dance world. During my time at Ohio State, I have experienced a new type of dance, concert dance. The background of this research came from this want to compare and contrast these two very different experiences. I have grown to find a love for commercial and concert dance. Therefore, I decided to create a group piece and a solo with two different versions that demonstration the transition of commercial to concert dance. The method in which his project is being conducted is through experimental rehearsals and a final performance in the Dance Departments BFA concert in March. The group piece is performing in two different shows. The first show is in December for a dance club I am involved in, Dance Connection, on Ohio States campus. The second show will be the BFA concert for the Dance Department at Ohio State. In between these two shows, I will alter the piece to make it more suitable for the concert. This includes changing the music and spacing. The rehearsals will be at least once a week with the group of dancers. I will also have a separate rehearsal for my solo that I will be creating. The first semester will focus on creating choreography to music I have chosen and do not own the right to. This music is a more contemporary and lyrical style. The second semester will focus on transforming the pieces to be performed in the Dance Department's concert. I am working with a musician to create new works to alter the choreography to. I will challenge myself by experimenting with new methods of choreography. These methods include improvisation, choreographing to lyrics, collaborative experimentation with the group, and creating phrases to be altered and repeated.
