Abstract

The absorption, fluorescence and Zeeman spectra of the $^{4}I_{15/2}$ and $^{4}I_{13/2}$ neodymium levels were studied in the isomorphous series $LaCl_{3}, PrCl_{3}, NdCl_{3}$. The slightly changing crystal field is evidenced by small shifts of the individual Stark and Zeeman components. No fluorescence from these levels was detectable for $NdCl_{3}$, while LaCl$3, PrCl$3 as well as the mixed crystal $LaPrCl_{3}$ were found to be excellent hosts for infrared fluorescence. Gradual replacement of La with Pr enhances the neodymium fluorescence. A multichannel analyzer coupled to the infrared detector via a voltage-to-frequency converter is used to study the decay properties. The intensity of the $^{4}I_{13/2}$ fluorescence was observable for well above 100 milliseconds, corresponding to about four lifetimes and was found to follow a single exponetial.
