Abstract

This paper represents a paleomagnetic study of a continuous set of samples taken from a Middle Eocene oil shale borehole core. Future investigators of the remaining sections of the core will find this paper helpful. The 20.75' section of the borehole studied was mainly of normal polarity with two definite reversal events and eight possible reversal events. The best fields found for demagnetization of the oil shale were 300, 400, and 500 oersteds. The relative shortness of the reversal events compared to the laminations observed in the oil shale indicate the laminations are not of annual nature. Possibly the laminations indicate climatic fluctuations of the order of a century in duration.
