Abstract

As part of a continuing study of preudohalide derivatives of ca and Sr. we have generated the $CaN_{3}$ and $SrN_{3}$ tree radicals by the gas phase reaction of the metal vapor with hydrogen azide. These are linear molecules with an ionic bond between $C3^{+}$ and $N_{3}^{-}$. The $\bar{A}^{2}\pi - \bar{X}^{2}\Sigma_{+}$ and $\bar{B}^{2}\Sigma^{+} - \bar{X}^{2}\Sigma_{+}$ transitions have been observed and 4 of the 5 vibrational frequencies determined. The presence at an extremely low frequency Sr N3 bending mode $1-40cm^{-1}$) gives rise to extensive sequence structure. A high resolution analysis of the $\bar{A}^{2}\pi - \bar{X}^{2}\Sigma^{+}$ transition of $SrN_{3}$ has been carried out. The spectrun is extremely dense due to the small rotational constant $B=0.045cm^{-1}$. The assumption of calculatred values for the N-N hand lengths yields a Sr-N distance at 2.25 {\AA}.
