Abstract

The ultraviolet, visible and near infrared spectra of $Nd^{+3}$ in single crystals of $Nd_{2}O_{3}, La_{2}O_{3}$ and other oxide lattices have been investigated at $300^{\circ}K, 80^{\circ}K$ and $10^{\circ}K$. Vibronic and electronic transitions are assigned, and the crystalline Stark splitting of electronic levels is examined in detail. The wavefunctions calculated for $Nd^{+3}$ in oxide lattices have been used to interpret the optical intensities and other properties peculiar to rare earth ions in oxide single crystals.
