Abstract

The 4143 {\AA} system of propynal $HC \equiv CCHO$ is assigned to a $^{2}A^{\prime \prime}-{^{1}}A^{\prime}$ transition of $\pi^{\ast}\leftarrow n$ type. The emission spectrum, obtained under low resolution from an electrodeless discharge in the flowing vapour, confirms the vibrational analysis of the ground $state.^{1,2}$ The vibrational analysis of the absorption spectrum closely follows that for the corresponding $^{1}A^{\prime \prime}-{^{1}}A^{\prime} transition.^{3}$ A rotational analysis of the origin band enables the excited state geometry to be tentatively determined.
