Abstract

The vampire's literary life is just as immortal as its physical life. It has occupied folklore for centuries before dominating written literature of the 19th century and continuing to dominate media in all its incarnations well into the 21st century. Due to its popularity, the vampire has adopted many connotations that are deeply imbedded within our culture. One of those is the association with vampires and the act of sucking blood, arguably the first thing anybody thinks of when they think of a vampire. However, I seek to disrupt this notion and explore the vampire that does not suck blood—the psychic vampire, through Florence Marryat's The Blood of the Vampire (1897), and Tana French's In the Woods (2007).
