Abstract

We have recently observed the laser induced fluorescence spectra of several halobenzene molecular cations with degenerate ground electronic states. These observations have been made both in the gas phase and in inert gas matrices. The cations studied include those of haxafluorobenzene sym-trifluorobenzene. sym-trichlorobenzene, and the deuterated analogs of the latter two. All of these ions should be subject to Jahr-Teller instabilities, and our spectra show indisputable evidence of these distortions. The height of the Jahn-Teller barrier, the geometry of the distorted ions, etc. will be discussed.
