Abstract

The absorption spectrum of the xenon dimer has been photographed with a 6.65 m VUV spectrograph using the rare gas continua (Ar and Kr) as background sources. Every atomic absorption line is associated on its long wavelength side with strong absorption bands, most of which are sharp and some of which are diffuse. In addition, a number of weak band groups is observed throughout the wavelength region investigated, 1500--1080 {\AA}. The upper states of these molecular bands are correlated to separated atom limits comprising one ground state atom and one atom in an excited state to which atomic absorption from the ground state in forbidden. The results of preliminary band analysis will be presented for four band systems which are related to the atomic absorption lines at 1470 {\AA} (6s), 1296 {\AA} ($6s^{\prime}$), 1251 (5d), and 1192 {\AA} (5d), respectively.
