Abstract

Rotational predissociation observed in static gas phase near infrared spectra has been used previously to determine precise ground vibrational state dissociation energies for $Ar-HF$ and $Ar-HCl^{a}$. The supersonic slit jet spectrum of $\nu_{1} Ar-HBr$ has been recorded using a diode laser spectrometer above R(J) 50 in order to try and observe directly the rotational predissociation in this complex. In addition, the corresponding static gas phase spectrum of the complex was recorded using a Bomem DA8-002 FTIR spectrometer. The latter spectrum permitted detection of an intense bandhead with a turn around at R(J) 62. Subsequently, this static gas phase spectrum was re-recorded at higher resolution using high frequency wavelength modulation detection with an infrared diode laser spectrometer. The results of these investigations will be used to provide experimental estimates of the ground vibrational state dissociation energy of Ar-HBr.
