Abstract

The absorptivity of disordered solids such as ice and vitreous silica is approximately proportional to the fourth power of the frequency at low frequencies. They can therefore be used as low-pass transmission filters for Michelson and lamellar grating spectrometers and as filters of high-order light for grating spectrometers. Below about 30 $cm^{-1}$ for vitreous silica and $60 cm^{-1}$ for ice the cut-off is sharper and the transmission is greater than that of other filters used in this region.
