Abstract
The principal objective of the laboratory program at NESS/NOAA is to obtain experimental results that will be useful in interpreting satellite data. In this connection, a study of the $NO_{2}$ spectrum at 6.2 $\mu m$ has been initiated. While employing diode lasers to do this study, it has been found necessary to use them as sources to the 3.5 m focal length vacuum grating spectrometer so that the spectral regions can be located readily. The never features of this technology will be elaborated. Line strengths, self-broadening and $N_{2}$-broadening coefficients of several $NO_{2}$ lines have been measured and a total band intensity for the $\nu_{3}$ band was deduced. Spin splittings have been resolved for several of the P branch transitions and the upper state spin-splitting constants were evaluated.
