Portrait of Israeli Prime Minister David Ben Gurion with sympathetic eyes, whose head and collar are almost completely carved with very little of the jaw or hair line remaining. First-state proofs [CMA 2013.057.007] depict him with a severely bulbous head and swollen eyes, printed in black and gold ink on laid paper. The block dimensions were altered for a second-state proof [CMA 2013.057.008] which features a different head shape as well as more carving in the cheek and neck. The artist presented one impression to the statesman through an intermediary and subsequently received a grateful acknowledgement from the State of Israel. An alternate woodcut exists in a different format, with Ben Gurion facing forward.
