Abstract
Stimulated Raman effect is observed in benzonitrile, ** liquid. This molecule possesses two equally intense and narrownormal Raman lines, one due to the C-C ($1000 cm^{-1}$) and the other to the $C\equiv N (2250 cm^{-1}$) stretching modes. The stimulated Raman spectrum shows a number of stokes and antistokes lines corresponding to these two modes, as well as lines at frequencies which are the sum and difference of the frequencies of these two vibrations. A mechanism will be discussed which accounts for the intensity and frequency of the observed combination lines. The application of this method in producing new intense coherent frequencies will be indicated.
