Abstract

A general least-squares method (collocation) which encompasses, as special cases, least-squares adjustment and least-squares prediction, is presented in detail and applied to various problems occurring in geodesy and photogrammetry, such as interpolation and coordinate transformation. In particular, this method permits an optimal simultaneous determination of geodetic positions and of the terrestrial gravity field by combining different data of any kind--terrestrial angle, distance and gravity measurements as well as data from advanced satellite techniques. To provide an adequate statistical background, an alternative statistical interpretation of the anomalous gravity field in terms of covariance analysis of individual functions is given, and its relation to the usual interpretation as a stochastic process on the sphere is discussed.
