Abstract

Oxides and flurides of alkali clusters were produced by reacting a beam of metal clusters with $N_{2}O$ or $SF_{6}$ in the region between nozzle and skimmer. The threshold for single photon ionization was measured by using a pulsed frequency doubled visible dye laser or a UV dye laser and detecting ions with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Resonant two photon ionization and depletion spectroscopy were employed to record optical spectra. Unfortunately, the exothermic reaction yields rather warm clusters and no vibrational structure was resolved. While our measured photoionization threshold $I_{p} = 3.81 (5) eV$ for $Na_{2}F$ is in good agreement with former $experiments^{1}$ we determined $I_{p} = 3.57 (5) eV$ for $Na_{3}O$ which is significantly lower than the previously published value of $3.90 (15) eV.^{2}$
