Abstract

Germyl silane (${G_{e}{H_{2}}Si{H_{3}$) has been prepared by a new method and its microwave spectrum studied. The following rotational constants have been obtained for the three most abundant germanium isotopes. $\begin{array}{cc} &B_{0}(Mc/S)\\ Ge^{70}& 3,706.01 \\Ge^{72} & 3,679.90 \\Ge^{74} &3,655.09\end{array}$ Spectral intensities are consistent with the very low dipole moment expected for the molecule $(\sim0.1 debye)$. With suitable assumptions for the $SiH_{3}, GeH_{3}$ parameters, the Si--Ge bond distance is found to be $2.358 \pm 0.005{\AA}$. $^{\ast}$ This research was made possible by support extended Harvard University by the Office of Naval Research.
