Abstract

The intensity properties of the $B ^{3}\Pi _{0}+_{u} - X ^{1} \Sigma_{g}^{+}$ transition in $I_{2}$ have been studied extensively using absorption, fluorescence, stimulated emission, lifetime methods, and optical coherent transients. Although the electronic transition moment function $\mu_{e}(R)$ is now thought to be reasonably well known, there remain puzzling discrepancies among the many sets of results reported on this problem. In the present work we have attempted to resolve some of the inconsistencies by means of very high resolution absorption measurements of individual rotational lines, obtained using a single-frequency cw dye laser as source. Results will be reported for measurements in the range 5200-6700 {\AA}.
