Abstract

Using pure nitrogen afterglow as a source, we found L-B-H bands of $N_{2}$ in the vacuum region. The results seem to confirm the new theory of afterglow mechanism of active nitrogen which was proposed recently by Cario and Reinnecke and developed further by Brook and Kaplan. Using impure nitrogen (trace of oxygen as an impurity), we found $\beta -$, $\gamma -$, and $\delta$-bands of NO molecule and they showed abrupt cut-off at certain vibrational levels. An attempt was made to explain the abrupt cut-off in connection with dissociation energy of NO and emission mechanism of the afterglow.
