Abstract

The Pauline and Post-Pauline traditions in early Christianity present a soteriological problem because there exists both similarities and differences in theology. The purpose of this research is to establish the diversity and explore possible reasons for such findings. The essay uses J. Z. Smith’s methodology of comparing texts from three perspectives: words, stories, and settings. The research concludes that this method, although it offers much insight, is not sufficient in explaining the soteriological similarities and differences between Pauline and Post-Pauline traditions, but it is a useful and thorough method for projects of comparison across disciplines.
