Abstract

Resonance Raman scattering has been observed from $O_{3}^{-}$ (ozonide) ions produced in single crystals of alkali-metal chlorates and bromates by the action of ionizing radiation. The splittings observed for the $\nu_{1}$ fundamental and its overtones, $n\nu_{1}$, are attributed to multi-site effects, and the number of split components of each mode is determined by the number of non-equivalent sites occupied by $O_{3}^{-}$ ions. The magnitude of the splitting observed between pairs of two-site components is proportional to the vibrational quantum number, n. Polarization measurements were used to determine the orientations of the $O_{3}^{-}$ ions in the materials studied.
