Abstract

Low resolution dispersion of the $CS_{2}$ fluorescence excited by an $N_{2}$ laser reveals several identifiable $v_{2}$ progressions in the near ultraviolet and a number of bands in the visible overlying an apparent continuum. Time resolved studies $confirm^{1}$ that the decay is characterized by two lifetimes in the low pressure limit. The isolated near ultraviolet bands have the shorter lifetime $(3 \mu$ sec). The visible emission remains compound under attempts to separate the two components. Hanle effect or magnetic depolarization experiments indicate that the excited states have magnetic moments on the order of one nuclear magneton. Identification of the states populated by the laser is discussed with reference to an earlier $proposal.^{2}$
