Abstract

The theory of electronic Raman effects is formulated. Special attention is paid to the possible asymmetry of the scattering tensor in resonance and non-resonance cases. The intensities of electronic Raman transitions are compared to those of vibrational Raman transitions and it is shown that different mechanisms are responsible for the intensities. Some experimental observations of electronic Raman transitions for rare earth ions in crystals are reported and compared to the theory.
