A full-length portrait of author Wallace Stevens, strolling along a sidewalk in a light colored suit. The walking stick in his left hand is depicted thirteen times, a Futurist way of representing the twirling cane. A first-state impression [CMA 2001.034.021] portrays Stevens in a dark suit, with a space between his right arm and torso. The eyes and chin are not well defined, his shoulders are broader, and only twelve walking sticks are depicted, plus there is a lack of textural detail in the background. The artist created a similar image of Stevens in Rotogravure Stroller [CMA 2001.034.067].
