Abstract
Through the literature, a legitimate need for the development of a unified theoretical frame, for the solution of terrain related mapping problems, is established. In this study, such a theoretical frame is investigated, and an efficient terrain modelling scenario, based on the theory of random fiels and fractional calculus, is developed. The proposed terrain model, as fractionally integrated white noise, gives rise to a recursive simulation scheme, which is useful in many cartographic applications. With the use of a robust estimation scheme the simulation process is inverted and a new insight in many mapping problems (like data compression, breakline detection, height interpolation and prediction, terrain classification, etc.) is obtained. A direct application of the inverse operation also leads to a proposed terrain generalization algorithm, which demonstrates the applicability of the studied theory to mapping problems.
