Abstract

High resolution infrared spectra of crystalline $C_{6}H_{6}$ and $C_{6}D_{6}$ have been obtained at $85^{\circ}$ and $155^{\circ}K$. Detailed measurements on multiplet frequencies and line shapes, including temperature dependence, have been made. Using a method of sample thickness measurement previously $described^{1}$, absolute absorption intensities for all ungerade fundamentals have been studied. In general, intensities of gas-phaseallowed fundamentals may change by factors of three in either direction, while forbidden transitions appear only weakly compared to allowed transitions. The sum of the integrated intensities (A-values) is independent of state of aggregation. The intensity results and some tentative interpretations will be discussed.
