Abstract
Previous vibrational studies of certain alkyltin compounds have shown that the two absorption bands of the tin-carbon stretching frequencies can be assigned to gauche and trans isomers. In addition, it has been found that a change in temperature can Induce a favored $configuration^{1}$ In the present study, we have obtained IR and Raman spectra of tetrabutyl-tin ($SnB_{4}$) in a series of normal alkanes. It has been found that the ratio of the intensities of the two $\nu_{S_{n-C}}$ bands varies, thus indicating an effect of the solvent on the conformation of the solute. Specifically, the trans conformation of $SnB_{4}$ is favored by increasing the alkane concentration and chain length. The results will be compared with calorimetric heats of mixing data and discussed in terms of recent free volume theories and estimates of orientational order.
