The vibrational distribution of iodine molecules freely evaporating from crystalline iodine has been determined by measurement of intensities in the visible band system using a multiple traversal cell. Preliminary measurements indicate that the gaseous molecules leaving the surface are in vibrational equilibrium with the solid.
