Abstract

Model hydrocarbons containing up to 50 carbon atoms were used to determine peak-height and integrated band intensities near 7.25$\mu$ for terminal methyl groups, methyl branches, and methyl groups on ethyl branches. Surprisingly, the intensities at $300^{\circ}F$. differ by a factor of three for these structures. [FIGURE] The intensities of bands associated with ethyl branches and various olefin structures were also determined: [FIGURE] Application of these data to the determination of branching and unsaturation in typical polyethylenes is summarized.
