Abstract

A satisfactory transmission cell and cryostat system which is capable of being used at very low temperatures is described. Changes observed in the infrared spectrum of methanol as the liquid was cooled, upon solidification, and upon passing through the lambda transition region are reported. Although the results are subject to several interpretations, they appear to favor the assignments of the $1100 cm^{-1}$ band in the liquid to the $CH_{3}$ rocking motion and the $1420 cm^{-1}$ absorption in the liquid to the OH bending motion.
