Abstract
Frank Ludden graduated from Harvard University in 1938 with a joint major in architecture and fine arts, emphasizing the history of art. In 1955, Ludden accepted a one-year, temporary appointment at Ohio State that soon, with the encouragement of the then-Director of the School, D. Alexander Severino, became a regular, tenure-track appointment in 1956. At the time, there was a strong emphasis on the University's vocational mission, although the meaning of such a mission had never been clearly defined. Within the artistic community many defined "vocation" as producing artists-in-residence, and these people supplemented their university salaries with the sale of their artwork
