Abstract

The vibrational spectra of $H g 2 C l 2, H g 2 B r 2$ and $H g 2 I 2$ have been obtained from polycrystalline samples of these materials. Raman spectra were recorded on a Cary Model 81 Raman Spectro-photometer using He-Ne laser excitation. The infrared frequencies were observed with a Beckman IR-11 double-beam far infrared spectrometer. Bands were observed in the $300−30 c m −1$ region. All fundamentals in the three compounds have been assigned and these assignments are supported by an analysis of the normal modes based on a valence force field. The assignments will be presented and discussed as are the results of the vibrational analysis.
