Abstract

In the works of Samuel Beckett, characters experience shame that lead to a division of the self. Despite feelings of alienation, characters must perceive themselves as well as interact with others. This usually takes the form of eye contact or, when sight is limited, of verbal communication. The search for something to make them whole and, in a sense, resolve the separation of the self, is the source of tragedy as well as of hope in Beckett's writing.
